Plan your trip

How many days in Hualien?

Two days is the sweet spot. One is possible but rushed; three or more lets you add the coast and the valley.

One day: possible, but tight

With about two hours on the train each way from Taipei, a day trip is doable. You'd have time for the Taroko Visitor Center and one open trail, Qixingtan, and dinner at the night market before a late train back. Book both trains early, and leave room for a delay. → One day in Hualien

Two days: the sweet spot

A night in Hualien gives you a full day in Taroko, an early morning on the coast (the sun rises over the Pacific), a whale-watching trip in season, and time for the wonton shops that close by lunch. → Two days in Hualien

Three days or more

  • The coast road south to the coastal terraces at Shitiping. → The coast road
  • The East Rift Valley, by train or car, for rice fields, hot springs and, from August, the daylily mountains. → The East Rift Valley
  • A spare day for weather. In typhoon season, an extra day means one storm doesn't wipe out your plans.

Questions

Can I do Hualien as a day trip from Taipei?

Yes, on the fast trains (about two hours each way), but it is rushed. One night is much better.

Is two days enough for Hualien?

For Taroko, the coast near the city and the night market, yes. Add a day or two for the coast road and the East Rift Valley.
