About Inside Hualien

Two Taiwan locals, and a lot of questions for the people who live here.

Hi, we're Vicky and Jason. Inside Hualien is our guide to Hualien, on Taiwan's east coast, written for people planning a trip.

Our Hualien

We have family in Hualien, and we visit as tourists. We have never lived here, so we see Hualien the way you will: as visitors. The difference is that we are Taiwan locals, so the trains, the tickets and the small family restaurants are not a mystery to us.

And we know the locals to ask. When we want to know which trail is open this month, where the family goes for wontons, or whether the coast road is worth the drive today, we ask the people who live here. That is what this guide passes on to you.

Vicky

Vicky was born and raised in Tainan. She brings the local's view: how Taiwanese people actually travel, eat and plan a trip, and what to ask when the official page doesn't say.

Jason

Jason is the foreigner of the pair. He has lived in Taiwan for around a decade. He knows what confuses a first-time visitor, from booking an east coast train to reading a bus timetable, so when something needs explaining, that's Jason's job.

How we write this guide

Every fact on this site comes from an official source or established press, and every page says when we last checked it. Hualien changes more than most places: earthquakes and typhoons close trails and roads, and timetables shift. So we link the official pages and tell you to check before you go. We give the way to get to every place, by train, bus, scooter or taxi, because there is no metro here. And we'll always be honest about what's worth your time.

Welcome to Hualien. We're glad you're here.
