Eating in Hualien is easy and cheap. Most of the famous food comes from small family shops downtown, many of them open only until lunch or the afternoon, and the evening belongs to the night market.

How to eat well here
- Eat the famous things early. Wonton and bun shops often sell out or close by early afternoon.
- Carry cash. Small shops and many night market stalls don't take cards.
- Check the day off. Family shops close one or two days a week, and not always the same day. Look at the Google Maps listing before you go.
- Try an Indigenous meal. It is the food you won't find elsewhere in Taiwan in the same way. → Indigenous food
