Typhoon season
The Central Weather Administration's records put the peak of typhoon formation from July to October, highest in August and September. 2026 was an unusually busy year. When a typhoon is coming, trains are cancelled, the Suhua Highway and the Taroko road close, and boats stay in port. If you are traveling in these months, keep a spare day and watch the forecast.
Season by season
- Spring (March to May): mild and green. Rain picks up in May.
- Summer (June to August): hot, with whale-watching at its best and the harvest festivals in July and August.
- Autumn (September to November): the daylilies bloom on the mountains in the south until about mid-October, but September and October are wet and typhoon-prone. November is calmer.
- Winter (December to February): cool and often cloudy, with quiet trails and easier train tickets outside Lunar New Year.
Good to know: Lunar New Year is the hardest time to get a train to Hualien. Book the day sales open.
