The coast road is the most beautiful drive in Hualien: few towns, the Amis villages of Fengbin, and the sea on your left all the way. Go by rental car or charter, or without a car, take the Tourist Shuttle 304, a hop-on, hop-off route down the coast from Hualien Bus Station (NT$680 day pass). The stops below are listed north to south, and run through the East Coast National Scenic Area. → The 304
Niushan Huting (牛山呼庭), Shoufeng
A stretch of wild coast in a coastal reserve conservation zone, with camping. Niushan Huting on Google Maps.
Fanshuliao (蕃薯寮), Fengbin
A gorge about 100 m deep beside Highway 11, cut by a stream on its way to the sea. Fanshuliao on Google Maps.
Shitiping (石梯坪), Fengbin
Shitiping is a terrace of marine-eroded rock and raised coral reef, stepped down to the sea. It is the classic stop on this road. Stay well back from the edge when the waves are up.
Lunch: Amis food in Fengbin
Fengbin is Amis country. The county describes the classic meal here as "eight greens and a soup", wild vegetables cooked with pork, with flying fish smoked over longan or acacia wood. → Indigenous food
Over the county line: the Baxian Caves
The Baxian Caves (八仙洞) are just south of the line, in Changbin Township, Taitung County. They are the site of the Changbin Culture, Taiwan's oldest known prehistoric site. Open daily 08:30 to 17:00, closed on Lunar New Year's Eve.
Before you drive: check the weather and the Highway Bureau for Highway 11. Typhoons and heavy rain bring rockfall and closures.
