Hualien has no metro, and buses outside the city are not frequent. For visitors, two Taiwan Tourist Shuttle (台灣好行) routes do most of the work: the 310 to Taroko and the 303 to Liyu Lake. Everything else is easier by taxi or scooter.
310 Taroko Route
- From Hualien Bus Station, Platform 6, next to Hualien Station
- To The Taroko Visitor Center, via Qixingtan and Xincheng
- Fare NT$154 one way (half fare NT$77)
- Passes One day NT$250, two days NT$400
- Pay Cash (no change given), EasyCard, iPASS or icash
The 310 Taroko Route is the shuttle most visitors use. It runs from the bus station beside Hualien Station up the coast, stopping at Qixingtan and Xincheng, to the Taroko Visitor Center. If you plan to hop off at more than one stop, the day pass pays for itself.
Shorter route since the earthquake: before April 2024 the shuttle ran on into the gorge, as far as Tianxiang. After the earthquake it was cut back to the Visitor Center, and we could not confirm that service beyond it has resumed. Check the official route page before you go.
The official page does not publish a frequency, and timetables change, so look up the day's times on the route page or the county's live timetable (below) the night before. Plan your return: the last buses back leave in the afternoon.
303 Liyu Lake and the south
The Tourist Shuttle 303 and Hualien Bus 1139 go south to Liyu Lake in Shoufeng, according to the county's tourism site. It is a quiet half day out of the city.
A new Tourist Shuttle route, the 8101C East Coast afternoon route, starts on November 1, 2026. Check taiwantrip.com.tw for its stops when it begins.
County buses and live times
Hualien Bus (花蓮客運) and other operators run the county's regular routes. Services are infrequent and built for residents, so a bus you can use for sightseeing may come once an hour or less. The county's bus timetable site has live times for every route.
Good to know: wave the bus down. On county routes, raise your hand as the bus approaches, and press the bell before your stop. Tap your card when you board and again when you get off, as the driver indicates.
Bikes
There is no YouBike in Hualien City. A temporary YouBike scheme in Guangfu, set up for flood recovery, ended on June 30, 2026. The county is rolling out a new dockless bike share called MOOVO (運點科技): NT$12 per 30 minutes, or NT$25 for an e-bike, with the first stations, including Hualien Station, planned for late October 2026 (Liberty Times, August 2026). We have not yet confirmed it has launched. Bike rental shops near the station are the reliable option for the cycle path to Qixingtan.
