Itineraries

One day in Hualien

An early train, the edge of the gorge, the sea, and dinner at the night market before the train home.

A day trip from Taipei works if you book both trains well ahead and keep the plan simple. This one needs no car.

Before you go

  • Book an early fast train out and an evening train back the day sales open, 28 days ahead. → The train
  • Check Taroko and the 310 timetable the night before. → Taroko, right now · The shuttle

Morning: to the gorge

Arrive at Hualien Station and walk to the bus station next door. Buy a 310 day pass (NT$250) and ride to the Taroko Visitor Center. Walk the Taroko Terrace Trail at the entrance and see the exhibits. For the deeper gorge, see the tip below.

Afternoon: the coast

Take the 310 back toward the city and get off at Qixingtan. Walk the pebble shore and the promenade. No swimming.

Evening: dinner

Back in the city, take a taxi to Dongdamen Night Market for dinner: look for a fried-egg scallion pancake and the Indigenous food street. Buy mochi for the train home, then taxi to the station with time to spare.

Good to know: to see more of the gorge in one day, swap the shuttle for a chartered taxi: the Visitor Center, Xiangde Temple or Tianxiang inside the Highway 8 time windows, and Qixingtan on the way back.

Questions

Is a day trip to Hualien from Taipei worth it?

It can be, on the fast trains, if you keep it to the Taroko Visitor Center, Qixingtan and the night market. Two days is more relaxed.
