Taroko

Qingshui Cliffs

Mountains that drop straight into a turquoise sea. Go to the Chongde rest area for the view.

The Qingshui Cliffs (清水斷崖) are where the Central Mountain Range meets the Pacific, north of Taroko, inside the national park. They are one of the classic views of the east coast, and you can still see them, from fewer places than before.

Where to see them now

  • Chongde rest area has reopened (Liberty Times, April 2026). It is the place to stop. The Chongde Trail beside it was listed as closed by the park on October 29, 2026.
  • Huide rest area is still closed, waiting for repairs after debris flow from Typhoon Gaemi in 2024. The park lists the Huide Trail as closed too.
  • The old coast road (Highway 9-Ding) from Heren to Daqingshui was decommissioned in January 2026. PTS reported that the Xiaoqingshui viewpoint and Chongde rest area are outside the decommissioned section.

Safety: the cliffs are an active rockfall zone. Stay inside the rest areas and marked viewpoints, and don't stop on the highway shoulder or in tunnels for photos.

From the sea

Some boat trips from Hualien Harbour head north along the coast. Turumoan, a whale-watching operator, sells a longer sea trip that booking sites describe as a Qingshui Cliff route; check the route with the operator before you book. → Whale watching
